Professional Background

From 1975 to 1977, Dr. McClure taught while pursuing his PhD at Rutgers. From 1977 to 1986, he held both assistant professor and professor positions at University of Oklahoma, where in his final year, he was a Research Fellow in the Science and Public Policy Program. In 1986, Dr. McClure began teaching at Syracuse University and from 1994-1999, he was recognized as “Distinguished Professor.” Also during his period at Syracuse, Dr. McClure was noted as “Distinguished Researcher” by the National Commission on Libraries and Information Science in 1993. Presently, Dr. McClure is recognized as “Distinguished Research Scientist” by Syracuse University, and is a Francis Eppes Professor of Information Studies. (C. McClure, personal communication, October 22, 2006.) The Eppes title is granted to FSU professors “who portray genuine leadership qualities and who are committed role models for the students they work with.” (http://www.fsu.edu/~butler/eppes.html )

In 1999, Dr. McClure founded the Information Use Management and Policy Institute in Tallahassee, FL. The Institute is currently being run by Dr. McClure and fellow FSU professor Dr. John Berlot, both of whom where identified as being “most highly productive faculty and as the most productive faculty team” among Information Schools and Library and Information Science programs for their work from 1999 to 2004. Contributions to Field

Dr. McClure has conducted several annual national surveys since 1994 with respect to internet use in public libraries and has been awarded grants from ALA and the The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to conduct that and related surveys through 2009. (C. McClure, Personal communication, October 22, 2006.)

Notably, in 1986, Dr. McClure and Dr. Peter Hernon compiled research about reference success in public and academic libraries. In their article, “Unobtrusive reference testing: The 55 percent rule” for Library Journal for April of that year, they proposed that reference services, particularly involving government document inquiries, should be reevaluated in terms of information needs. (Hernon & McClure, 1986) (for more information on this paper, see accuracy)

Dr. McClure has written/co-authored 72 books since 1980, countless journal articles and many other print contributions. (C. McClure, personal communication, October 22, 2006.) His work reflects particular emphasis on reference services in connection with govenement information access. In his book Improving the Quality of Reference Service for Govenment Documents, McClure expressed the opinion that, "...reference service for government publications serves as an indicator of the quality of reference services for the library as a whole." (1983)

He is currently working on several pieces including "Peer review of chat reference transcripts: Approaches and strategies" for Library and Information Science Research with Lili Luo of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on the blossoming new area of "chat reference."
