Biographical Information and Professional Experience

Born in 1947, Elaine Jennerich first began her customer service "career" working in her father's pharmacy. During college she worked as a children's librarian assistant in her hometown public library. While her master's graduate study in Library Science at Drexel University, she worked part-time at the German Society of Philadelphia, and did the majority of custom service work by phone and letter (no email at that time). The variety of her early experiences convinced her that working with customers and fulfilling the customers' information needs were meaningful and were the best part of library work. Not only concerned on technology and all the changes it brought to the reference service, but also much more dedicated in to the research in human element and service communication. Subsequently, her Ph.D. study in Library Science at the University of Pittsburgh especially focuses on the public service, specifically the verbal and nonverbal skills needed to conduct successful reference interviews. Later, her career led to her to become head of reference services of Moody Library at Baylor University and some other small colleges. In 1994, she became the Coordinator for Staff Training and Development at the University of Washington. There she develops and teaches classes and workshops on customer service topics regularly to all levels of staff, which reaches 450 library staff members on three campuses, as well as student assistants, employees in the areas of technology; management; communication; personal development, etc.. From 2006 until present, she is assigned the director of the Organization Development and Training for Suzzallo Library, responsible for moving forward Libraries initiatives and programs for system-wide improvement and development of personnel, processes and communication, as well as keeping the organization focused on the Libraries’ and the Dean’s priorities.

Contributions to Reference Librarianship

With the experience as the librarian and academic department chairman, Elaine Jennerich and Edward Jennerich have coauthored and authored many researches as well as several workshops concentrating on, but not exclusive to, enhancement of the quality of departmental instruction and the capability for students to obtain information through course related or subject specific library instruction and workshops; various training and developing skills for reference librarians to satisfy users’ information need in various types of library interviews, especially in the academic libraries.

Their most influencing work, The Reference Interview as Creative Art was first published in 1987, and then the second edition in 1997. Emphasizing customer service as the vital part of library service and reference interview as a key element in assisting library users with information needs, this book shows librarians how to combine creativity with professional expertise to produce user’s satisfaction. In the ten years since therir first edition was published, much has changed in the theoretical understanding and reality of public service communications (Andrew B. Wertheimer, 2000). Completely updated, the second edition reflects sociological and technological changes and trends that have occured in the last decade. With a compact and readable style, their book was able to reach audiences who can’t be taught all of the professional jargon and concepts, and became a pratical tool for ibrarians, library school students, library staff working directly with patrons, and library science educators. "An ideal overview of the interview process"(Public Library Quarterly), this book "Shows librarians how to combine creativity with professional expertise to improve customer service"(Reference and Research Book News), and "highly recommended for all libraries, academic ones in particular"(Journal of Academic Librarianship).

Their new book The Reference Interview in the Digital Age will been publish rencently on Nov.30. After ten years’ technologucal and theoretical development, this book is highly expected by the scholars and professionals in the relative library reference field.

Melvil Dewey said you could polish agate and you could polish walnut, but you couldn't polish a pumpkin.
